Purine nucleotides are two-carbon-containing nitrogenous bases (guanine and adenine) bonded to a ribose or deoxyribose molecule and three phosphate groups. These compounds can act as antimetabolites, extracellular messengers, and chain terminators that inhibit viral DNA polymerase.
