- Measures the distance a material flows under its own weight during a given time interval to determine consistency
- Used extensively by preservers, producers of jams, jellies, and other highly viscous products such as tomato paste, ketchup, baby foods, cosmetics, lotions, and paint
- Enables user to predetermine formulas to standardize production lots
